Lots to do and see

Over the two days, there are many things to do and see at this family friendly event. Attractions include a craft tent, toys and hobbies, and art and antiques. Most of the stalls are small traders each offering products that cannot be found on the High Street. As a result, many items are made in part by hand, ensuring these are exclusive gifts and treasures to take home.

Again this year the organisers have arranged a busy and diverse programme in the two arenas. These range from falconry to gymnastics demonstrations, plus a dog show, sheep shearing and the amazing agility of llamas. And no event would be complete without live music from bands and musicians to help you relax and soak up the atmosphere.

Food glorious food

A visit to the Food Hall is an absolute must. Here you will find some of the area’s finest retailers of international foods and wines, together with pie makers and cider makers from across the south west. Food stuffs range from home-reared meats, gourmet fish products and organic veg to artisan cheeses, hand-roasted coffee and gluten-free cakes. All of which provide an irresistible combination of local produce and goods from around the globe. The Food Hall is a great place to stop, chat and indulge in some delicious offerings.

‘Uniting Creativity’ is the catchphrase coined by Makers Central, a brand new show taking place at the NEC in early May. The show is the creation of Nick Zammeti (NZ Woodturning and businessman) and aims to bring together makers from lots of different disciplines. Among those demonstrating and displaying their work will be woodturners, carvers, furniture makers, metalworkers, artists, designers and inventors. Many of these makers have a YouTube channel and will be taking centre stage in the dedicated 'YouTube Makers Zone'.

See our top woodworkers

We will be sending some of our most highly skilled makers to wow visitors; Craig Steele (Skill Centre Manager), Jason Breach (renowned woodworker and woodturner), Ben Beddows (woodworker and pyrography specialist) and Paul Otter (Deputy Store Manager at Warrington) will all be at the show. Over the period of the show, they'll be making a Windsor chair on each day.

Get involved

Our team will be encouraging visitors to lend a hand with the Windsor chair making. This is likely to involve cutting and shaping the seat, and setting up and steam bending the bows. So, it’s going to be a hive of activity over the two days.

Other attractions on our stand will include scroll sawing with Katie Reid (Deputy Manager at Cardiff) and pyrography with Chris Kirk (Merchandiser at HQ). Also, we are planning to have a creative corner for visitors under the guidance of Katie and Chris.

Competition time

The icing on the cake will be two fantastic prizes; with one prize up for grabs on each day. You can win a place on the 5-day Windsor chair course we run at our Skill Centre in Axminster, Devon. On the course you will learn how to make a Windsor chair. At the end of the course, you can take the chair you make home with you. No experience is needed – you just get stuck in under the supervision of our tutors. We will even include local accommodation for the duration of the course as part of the prize. Just pop along to our stand, opposite the YouTube Makers Zone, and find out more about the competition and how to enter.

We hope to see you at Makers Central for what looks to be an incredible two days of making.

Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre

New venue

To coincide with its 20th anniversary, the show will move to a new, permanent venue in Farnborough. For many years the event has taken place in a temporary structure. However this year, the show will be the first major exhibition to take place in the new, purpose-built £30m conference and exhibition centre at Farnborough International.

And with the first powered flight having taken off from Farnborough back in 1908, it is a fitting location for such an exhibition.

Alongside many well-known names in the engineering world, Axminster will be exhibiting for the second year in a row. “Our team will demonstrate the CNC Technology iKX3 mill and iKC6 lathe, milling an aluminium component and turning a brass component on the lathe. Plus pillar drills and a bandsaw from the Axminster Engineer Series brand will be on display” says general sales manager Mark O’Halloran.

At this event, visitors will discover new local and national suppliers, many exhibiting for the first time. The event is full of innovations, new products and demonstrations. A free technical seminar programme will be running over the three days. In addition, visitors will have the opportunity to bring along plans and technical drawings for discussion, and potentially resolve any manufacturing issues.

In short, Southern Manufacturing and Electronics is among the best marketplaces in the UK for all varieties of manufacturing hardware.

The exhibition is free to attend and parking is also free. For more information, visit the show's website.
