WoodSpur Decking Screws

What is a decking screw?

Decking screws are screws designed specifically for decking. A wooden deck is an outdoor structure that has to bear shifting loads, day after day, so it is important to use screws that will stand the test of time. What this means is that your deck needs to be able to hold itself together.

To achieve an attractive, solid and sturdy deck that you can enjoy safely, it’s always best to opt for purpose-built decking screws such as WoodSpur decking screws. Made from A2 stainless steel, WoodSpur decking screws are highly corrosion-resistant and non-rusting. What’s more, the double thread design pulls boards tight and locks them in place. This makes them ideal for decking use.

Advantages of decking screws

  • For quick and reliable assembly, WoodSpur deck screws feature a Torx T25 drive. With this type of drive there’s minimal risk of cam-out and greater transmission of torque. This makes them excellent for pressure treated, tanalised timber.
  • What's more, the sharp, penetrating tip eliminates the need for pilot holes, saving you time and effort!
  • WoodSpur decking screws are corrosion resistant to prevent rusting and weakness of the structure over the years.
  • Deck screws are far superior to nails as the are more secure. They also allow boards to be easily lifted to gain access below the deck for maintenance or repair.

Clamex

Detachable furniture fitting on the basis of the form-locking P system anchorage. The form-locking P-System allows for an exceptionally fast and powerful anchorage in the workpiece.

  • Detachable with high clamping force
  • Stackable allowing for flat pack delivery
  • Versatile as you can create a range if angles

Lamello Clamex

Bisco

Part of the P-System range of connecting fittings.

  • The Bisco range is used in combination with Clamex or Tenso as a cost-effective solution when clamping force is only required from every second fitting
  • It is also great when the use of more affordable aligning elements in between are used to maintain flush grooves as an alternative
Lamello Bisco

Tenso

Invisible, self-clamping connector with a high clamp force.

  • The Tenso range includes a self-clamping connector with three functions: alignment, clamping and connecting.
  • The very high level of clamping force means you can glue work pieces without the need for screw clamps or pressure.
  • This makes these fittings ideal for glued furniture, e.g. bathroom furniture, sideboards, door frames, claddings, small shelved units, false edges, frames, etc.

UJK Technology Parf Mk II Guide System
Create cutting benches or boards in less than 30 minutes

Building on the success of the Parf Guide System, the new Parf Mk II Guide System is efficient, simple to use and reliable. If you’re looking to create multiple custom-made benchtops or portable cutting boards in under 30 minutes, this is the tool for you. It guarantees perfect 45° and 90° cuts, producing highly accurate results every time and eliminates any potential issues through best engineering practices. Want to discover more features and benefits? Read our Insights Guide to find out more.

UJK Technology Parf Super Dog
A useful accessory for making accurate, repeatable cuts

Tall standard dogs, no matter how tight the tolerances in the dog hole, will always have a little movement. However, without a locking device, this will inevitably result in a slight wobble and a possible loss of accuracy. A simple twist of the top of the Parf Super Dog changes fine tolerance into zero tolerance and locks it firmly in place. Once locked, there is no wobble or movement; it is rock solid. Read the story of the Parf Super Dog to discover more about how Axminster develop tools in-house.

UJK Technology Parf Long Super Dog
Take full advantage of a plunge saws' maximum depth of cut

These long version Parf Super Dogs allows thicker work to be used especially with a track saw and Parf clips. While conventional Super Dogs are perfect for sheet materials, they are limited when cutting deeper sections. The Parf Long Super Dogs overcome this issue and deliver fantastic results.

UJK Parf Chamfer Tool
Give your work table another dimension

Use to cut a neat, small chamfer around the precise 20mm dog hole made by the 20mm cutter. The biggest advantage of this shallow chamfer is that it allows full use of the UJK Parf Super Dog, when fitted with its stop collar. Next, it prevents damage from the repeated insertion of dogs, clamps and other accessories by removing the sharp edge around the hole. With 4 tungsten carbide cutters, this handy accessory is to be used by hand. Ideal for a custom cutting table as well the Festool MFT table.

UJK Technology Parf Dust Port
Dust extraction for Parf Guide System; allows direct connection to a vacuum extractor

UJK Technology Assembly SquareMaintain a perfect square while assembling frames, cabinets, or just about any box!

Next, this Assembly Square is designed to be clamped to boxes, picture frames, shelf cabinets and outside corners to assist with squaring during glue up. UJK Technology Parf Repeat Stop
Enables repeat length cuts on an MFT/3, MW1000 or UJK Multifunction Workbench

Made from stainless steel, the Parf Repeat Stop (PRS) is also fantastic for use with custom 20mm hole pattern benches made with the UJK Parf Guide System. A great addition to your workshop, the PRS complements this modern way of working.

UJK Technology Multifunction Workbench for Parf Dogs
With a phenolic face, this robust workbench is resistant to wear making it ideal for workshop or onsite use

Made from high quality birch plywood, this Multifunction Workbench is ideal for site work. For portability, there are cut-outs in the frame enabling it to fit onto a pair of Brennenstuhl trestles (included). The strong steel tube trestles fold almost flat for easy transportation and the splayed legs create a very stable workstation. The 12mm thick birch ply inner frame is box construction ensuring that any top placed upon the frame will remain perfectly flat and not sag.

In terms of storage, the centre of the frame allows you to store dogs, clamps and other accessories. Also included is a pair of UJK Technology Twist Dogs. The Twist Dog’s unique feature is a pin through the spigot; a useful feature when you need to align a workpiece vertically.

Just need the frame? If you don't require the full kit, the UJK Technology Multifunction Workbench (Frame Only) is also available to purchase.

UJK Technology Surface Cam Clamps (Pair)
Overcome the problem of holding an item on a flat surface using only side pressure

Supplied as pack of 2, these Surface Cam Clamps are based on the successful UJK Surface Cam Duck Clamp. The new and updated version has a 20mm dog hole slightly offset to create the cam action. Designed for use on multifunction benches, these handy workshop accessories are ideal for planing, carving, drilling, sanding etc. For complete flexibility, they can be used on any bench with the correct size hole.

UJK Technology Backstop
A useful stop or assembly aid; the 3 dog holes allow straight or diagonal placement

On its own, this backstop makes a useful planing stop. However alongside another placed at 90° or diagonally at 45° it can form an assembly jig. CNC machined from thick, durable HDF Valchromat, the UJK Back Stop features three dog holes. In all, two are for lateral and longitudinal positioning on a Multifunctional table while the third allows diagonal placement.

UJK Technology 12mm Guide Pups
Perfect for fixing other items or jigs with corresponding 20mm holesFully compatible with other Parf and multifunction bench accessories, UJK Technology Guide Pups are CNC machined from 303-grade stainless steel for incredible strength. At a 12mm projection above the tabletop, one of the biggest benefits of these lower profile dogs is that they are ideal for situations where a taller dog would cause an obstruction. Measures 20mm in diameter.

UJK Technology 50mm Guide Dogs
Ideal for use with guide rails or used as additional stops in conjunction with Parf Super Dogs

Finally, just like the 12mm Guide Pups, these 50mm Guide Dogs are fully compatible with many other Parf system and multifunction bench accessories. Featuring a machined stop collar which fits into a chamfer around the dog hole, this feature prevents the dogs falling through the table. Next, it also provides a register. This guarantees the dog sits perpendicular to the work surface and ensures a flush fit at the base. If you have a table with plain holes and need to modify it, the UJK Technology Parf Chamfer Cutter is the perfect tool to use. Alternatively, use a router with a bevel cutter to create a slight chamfer. Use in pairs to enjoy the highest levels of precision.

Find the Bosch battery you need

Knowing which battery to buy can be a daunting task but it need not be. With various different batteries available, find out more about the difference between them all so you are able to choose the Bosch battery to suit your individual requirements.

Bosch ECP

Bosch Electronic Cell Protection (ECP) is built in to Bosch batteries to guard against overloading, overheating and deep discharge. It is also great for intelligent power management and ensures a longer lifetime.

  • Protection against overload
The tool is shut down if the battery pack is put under excessive load.
  • Protection against overheating
The electronics intervene and shut down the tool before the battery heats up excessively.
  • Protection against deep discharge
The ECP ensures that the battery is not deeply discharged, therefore protecting it against irreparable damage.

Lithium-ion (Li-Ion) Batteries

The latest Li-Ion technology allows this battery to be charged unusually quickly. It also permits the battery to be topped up at any time, even if its charge level is still quite high, with no reduction in lifetime.

Thanks to the Bosch exclusive ECP (Electronic Cell Protection) technology, a Bosch lithium-ion battery will never overheat. If the battery gets too hot during discharge, the ECP actively manages the performance of the tool until the battery has reached the optimum working temperature again. This means that there is no risk of overheating. Furthermore, Bosch has developed a heat conductive housing (Bosch Heat Management), which transfers the heat from the inside to the outside of the battery pack for added safety.
In comparison to older style batteries, Li-Ion batteries have a higher energy density compared to NiCd/NiMH batteries. Lithium-ion cells have about three times the voltage of nickel cells, which means that one lithium-ion cell makes up for 3 nickel cells. In essence, the Li-Ion battery pack is lighter in weight due to its build structure.

CoolPack Batteries

These batteries feature Bosch CoolPack technology; a passive cell cooling system. This refers to the process of optimally dissipating heat which in turn causes temperature reduction. This allows for better performance and a greatly improved run time. You'll also enjoy an increased lifetime by up to 100 per cent compared to Li-Ion batteries without CoolPack. Finally, one of the greatest benefits of Bosch CoolPack batteries is that you only need to stop when the job is done.

The new generation of Bosch batteries

ProCORE18V Batteries

A new dimension of power for all Bosch Professional 18V power tools. The ProCORE18V batteries 4.0Ah, 8.0Ah and 12.0Ah are Bosch's most powerful batteries ever. This is thanks to the latest cell technology and superior heat management.

Compact 4.0Ah Batteries

All the power of a conventional battery but without the weight. This type of Bosch battery is ideal for all drilling and screwdriving applications where a lower weight comes in handy. Up to 39% more compact and noticeably lighter than comparable batteries of its class, the latest cell technology of the ProCORE18V 4.0Ah delivers just as much power as a standard 4.0Ah battery.

Bosch ProCORE batteries
High power batteries now available

Performance 8.0Ah Batteries

These batteries have the perfect balance between weight and power. As a high performance battery, whenever you need high power over a long period, this is the perfect battery to use. The ProCORE18V 8.0Ah delivers fantastic performance despite its compact size. It is 30% smaller than comparable high performance batteries which means it offers the highest energy density in its class.

In terms of power, it is comparable to corded tools of up to 1600W. The ProCORE18V 8.0 Ah offers approximately 90% more power than the previous 18 volt 6.0 Ah battery. This significant power increase is thanks to an improved cell design and measures taken to minimise internal resistances. Overall, this improves efficiency.

Next, Bosch has optimised its proven CoolPack technology even further. This means that this high-performance battery can handle higher power demand over a longer period. It also helps to substantially prolong the battery's lifetime compared to a conventional battery. Heat dissipation from the inside out is maximised in this technology by the synergy between several components. The housing and the heat sinks in the interior are manufactured from high-density polyethylene. Both the material and the special design facilitate better heat dissipation. This aims to maximise the surface area.

Lastly, the battery is designed without any internal spacing. This ensures the heat it produces is not caught in the interior. Improved cell connectors made from copper provides lower resistances and more power as a result. The battery pack has special openings for heat dissipation during the charging process as well. This cooling feature means that the battery can be charged very quickly. The five-level LED display allows tradespeople to keep the charge level of the under control at all times.

Endurance 12.0Ah Batteries

Enjoy maximum performance and run-time with this beast of a battery! This type of Bosch battery allows you to work with maximum power for an exceptionally long time. It is ideal for extreme applications as it delivers every ounce of power out of your tools. Thanks to the triple-layered cell structure of the ProCORE18V 12.0Ah, the Endurance 12.0Ah battery delivers performance as powerful as that of corded tools.

Hand Sanding

To achieve efficient and virtually dust free sanding, choose a Mirka OS sander in combination with net products. As a non-woven abrasive, it is effective and easy to use for de-nibbing applications. De-nibbing is the removal of “nibs” and imperfections from your finish. This process should be performed between each coat of any finish applied.Mirka Abrasive

Surface Sanding

Finally, if you need to sand or finish solid surface materials, Mirka have a selection of fantastic abrasives to choose from. UJK Technology Compact Router Table with Cast Iron Top

This router table with cast iron top is a solid, dependable unit that will give many years of useful service. The cast iron top is a great option where stability and vibration damping are essential. What's more, there's little resistance when passing stock across the router table during use. Finally, the quality of the surface grinding top is excellent. The cast iron top is also available separately.

UJK Technology Compact Router Table with Laminated Top

Made of high grade birch ply with hard wearing, low friction phenolic laminate, the worktop router table ensures workpieces glide smoothly. Ideal if your workshop is suffering from damp, the ply core ensures the top remains flat throughout its working life. It measures 600mm x 400mm. Again, the laminated router top is also available separately.

Choose your router table inserts

Next, after you've assembled your router table you’ll need to fit the insert plate.

Want to save time?

UJK Technology 10mm Aluminium Router Table Insert c/w Universal Base

Our 10mm aluminium pre-drilled option accommodates many different types of router. It's quicker to set up as it comes with a circular universal base attached to the underside of the plate. This makes for easier router mounting which means you'll enjoy more efficient working and save time along the way. Alternatively, the UJK Technology 6mm Aluminium Router Table Insert Plate is also very good as you don't lose too much cutter height.

Using a heavy ½” router?

UJK Technology 10mm Phenolic Router Table Insert Plate

Our phenolic 10mm router table insert offers a very substantial mounting for your router. Made from hard plastic, it will hold its shape. It has a blank base underneath so you will need to drill it to fit your router. For convenience, there is a centring guide template that tells you how to drill it. Ideally this should be in a pillar drill.

The premium option

UJK Technology Router Elevator

Fitting straight into all UJK Technology router tables, our UJK Router Elevator allows fast accurate height adjustment from above the table. For convenience, there's a universal base to accept different routers. One of the greatest advantages of the elevator is that it allows you to adjust the height of the cutter from above the table. This is a great time saver if you regularly change the depth of cut.

If you think the elevator could be suitable, why not pop into one of our Axminster stores and see it for yourself? Please note: if your router fits the 10mm aluminium option it doesn't necessarily mean it will fit the elevator. If you have any queries about this please speak to our technical department who will be more than happy to help.

Upgrade your table to suit your individual needs

UJK Technology Router Table NVR Switch

The UJK Technology NVR Switch clamps directly to the leg stand of our UJK Professional router tables. Supplied with 2m of cable with a moulded 13A plug and a steel clamping bracket, it provides an independent switching arrangement for your router. It offers the protection of No Voltage Release. This means that if the power fails, the circuit breaker opens and the motor will not restart when the power is restored. With a protected 13A socket, it is perhaps the safest way to use your router in a table. For safety purposes, you'll need to be able to "latch" your router's switch in the "on" position.

UJK Technology Quick Stop (for UJK router tables)

An excellent device for stopped chamfers or rebates, this quick stop fits all UJK Technology router tables. It is very useful for repeat cuts, making it ideal for small box making. For ease of use, it is simple to attach to the top of your router table fence. When not in use, it simply flips up out of the way. This handy piece of kit is a great alternative to clamping and then removing temporary blocks.

UJK Technology Dust Extraction Box

An excellent addition to any UJK Technology Pro or Compact router table. It is also suitable to fit to other custom made tables of your own design. The 100mm diameter outlet on the back also incorporates a 62mm inlet and hose which enables extraction from both above and below the table simultaneously. Adjustments to your router can be made via an access door at the front, complete with magnetic closure.

UJK Technology Double Horizontal Featherboards

Keep your fingers safe and minimise movement with these high quality featherboards. Designed to hold the wood against the fence and the table, they help to ensure that your workpiece doesn't move about when routing. With adjustable, anti kickback fingers which act as springs, the chance of injury is greatly reduced. Movement or bounce back is also significantly reduced but it is advisable to set up a number of featherboards against the table and the fence for safety purposes.

UJK Technology Vertical Featherboards

An excellent accessory for safer routing, these vertical featherboards simply attach to your router table fence with the supplied T bolts. For safer and more efficient working, they provide extra support for the workpiece as it is being passed across the cutter. What's more, the amount of applied pressure is sustained over a wide area. This means you are less likely to experience chatter or breakout on the workpiece. For safety reasons, they should be positioned either side of the cutter offering downward pressure on both the infeed and outfeed sides of the table.

Router Table Inserts

Available in a variety of useful sizes and also as a blank insert so you can create your own custom hole size, these router table inserts are safe and stable to use. They provide greater stability across your router table and also help to reduce the hole size. In turn, this improves the extraction. From a safety perspective, it is important to select the insert disc depending on the size of the router cutter you are using. This will ensure greatest levels of safety and and significantly reduce the likelihood of wood chips flying about.

UJK Technology Metric Threaded Guide Bush Set

Whether you are carrying out template or inlay work, this is an essential set for your router. For convenience, these bushes fit most UK routers. All that is required is the addition of a threaded guide bush adaptor. Simply select the correct adaptor for your router and you'll enjoy the accuracy and precision of this invaluable set.

Highly accurate, this guide bush set will fit many router table insert plates that have a stepped central hole to accommodate them. Neatly contained in a robust storage case, the set includes 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24 and 30mm guide bushes along with a locking ring.

UJK Technology Fine Fence Adjusters for Router Tables

These adjusters are a great accessory for the UJK Technology router tables. They allow you to finely adjust the fence as required. Simply add them to the fence locking knobs and add fine adjustment via the thumb wheel. Once adjusted the fence is then locked in place and ready to use.

UJK Technology Off Set Bars for Router Tables

These H-section extrusions fit behind the outfeed fence of the UJK Technology router table fence. They enable you to achieve an exact 1mm offset between the infeed and outfeed fences once in position. Furthermore, their clever design means you can rotate each extrusion by 180° and reinsert them in position to achieve an exact 2mm offset. Supplied as a pair.

UJK Technology Extension for Cast Iron Router Table

This extension provides vital extra support when machining wide workpieces. It is ideal for raised panels on cupboard doors. Fixing is just a simple matter of attaching a bracket on either side, on the underside of the table using 3 cap head screws per side. The extension slides in and out of the brackets on strong rectangular section bars. Going from zero to 260mm, at its maximum, it effectively gives you approximately 610mm from the centre of the router cutter to the edge of the extension. The top edge of the extension is a low friction material, ensuring that your work glides smoothly. Made specifically for the UJK Technology Professional Router Table, it is 810mm in length, running along the entire front edge of the table.

Using the Allen key, it is easy to loosen the flange. Next, replace the current saw blade with a more suitable blade to match your upcoming task. The FastFix system encourages you to use the best saw blade for the material you intend to cut. The benefits include quicker, easier and safer saw blade changes as well as savings in terms of time and money as you continue to work with little down time.

  • Its ambidextrous design makes it suitable for both left and right handed operation.
  • Furthermore, the main casting provides a firm foundation to support the twin bars which the saw unit travels on. This gives the saw its supreme accuracy and solid feel in operation. The machine comes with a 60 tooth blade (2.5mm kerf), adjustable bevel and work clamp.
  • The guiding rails do not extend towards the end of the machine for safe transportation. Also, the clamp prevents it from extending unintentionally. Lastly, the head of the KAPEX saw locks down when not in use which means it can be stored in more places as it becomes more compact.

Dust Extraction

  • Next, the dust extraction and collection system gets rid of 91% of sawdust when used in conjunction with a Festool CT dust extractor. When used together, you'll enjoy a cleaner, safer working environment.

An Introduction to Mitre Saws

Powered mitre saws can be used for a number of different tasks. In recent years, they have fast become a workshop/site must-have, thanks to the various features and applications covered. Mitre saws accurately crosscut with presets that include all common angle settings. What's more, they offer the fastest and easiest way to cut angles as well as compound angles. Many mitre saws now also have a trenching facility which means you can produce housing joints and tenons with ease etc.

Bosch Mitre Saw

Uses

  • Crosscut boards to length
  • Cornice mitre joints
  • Picture frames
  • Box jointing etc.

Build Quality

Build quality is also a major factor of any mitre saw. A high build quality will give high accuracy for every cut whilst delivering the best results in terms of safety.

At first glance, the choice of mitre saws can be daunting for some. From simple ‘chop’ style machines to what are now the most common slide mitre saws, there's plenty to choose from. Furthermore, the Bosch Axial Glide Mitre Saw uses a hinge style system for even greater capacity in width and depth of cut.

Accuracy is also very important. A mitre saw has to be accurate and have positive settings so there is no movement when cutting. Care must be taken in use as with any machine and the work held firmly to avoid it grabbing.

Capacity

To choose the correct mitre saw for your needs it is important to decide on the capacity you will require. In doing so, this will narrow down your choice. Saws are generally categorised into blade size. For instance, a Bosch GCM8SJL is a 216mm (8”) blade whilst a GCM12SDE is a 305mm (12”) blade. Other manufacturers have different blade sizes so you will need to do some research and see what the stated capacities are on the individual machines.

Features

Firstly, all mitre saws are fitted with scales for table adjustment with preset indents so you can do fast repetitive cuts. Many also allow you to adjust for other angles when required. Table adjustment is done from the front of the machine.

Bosch Mitre SawIn terms of bevel angles, these are achieved by tilting the head. It is important to check as some mitre saws feature a double bevel tilt, whereas some only tilt in one direction. With this in mind, if you are using a mitre saw for something like an intricate moulding it will not be so easy if the machine has only a single bevel.

Next, lasers show exactly where the blade will cut. This is not only very beneficial but also saves time. Some lasers require manual adjustment, however many are preset.

Furthermore, an adjustable depth stop is also a great advantage as it allows for trenching. This is particularly useful for tenoning or housing joints.

A length stop is also fitted to some machines to limit the length of travel.

Work hold downs are also very important and supplied on many models. These allow you to secure the work whilst keeping hands well away from the blade.

Bosch Double Bevel Mitre Saw

Mitre Saw StandWork Support

It is very important to ensure your work is supported correctly. If and when you need to increase the table length, many models are fitted with pull out extensions or bars.

Next, we recommend the use of a dedicated mitre saw stand with supports. At the very least, opt for a mitre saw with roller support stands.

For workshop use, the mitre saw can be conveniently built into a bench system. This will allow for repetitive cuts.

A great accessory is the UJK Technology Track and Stop Kit which takes the guesswork out of repeat cutting of wood to length.

For added flexibility, you can use the kit with a mitre saw, radial arm saw or a drill press.

UJK Technology Track & Stop Kit

Also be aware if you are building into a dedicated mitre saw bench that some need room behind for the park position. In contrast, some no longer require this due to the rail design which allows the saw to be put flush against a wall.

Dust Extraction

A dust outlet is also now fitted to many mitre saws and where possible, connect to a suitable dust extractor.

Bosch Mitre Saws

Mitre Saw Blades

The type of blade fitted is also very important when choosing a mitre saw. Mitre saw blades are available with different tooth formations to cut not only solid wood and manmade board but also aluminium and plastics.

To guarantee the best results, it is important to learn the correct techniques to ensure you use the machine in the most productive and efficient way.

More Hints and Tips

Check the Accuracy

It is essential to check the accuracy of your mitre saw once you've purchased it. This is because they can sometimes come out of alignment during the delivery process. Furthermore, if you are experiencing any kickbacks, (when the saw physically kicks back after you hit a knot in the timber), it is advisable to check the accuracy again. For best practice, it is recommended to periodically check your mitre saw as it can come out of alignment if used frequently.

Bosch Mitre Saws

Putting Your Safety First

If you are using a mitre saw it is essential that you use adequate safety equipment at all times. This is because mitre saws can be quite hazardous if you don't wear the correct safety equipment. With this in mind, it is important to always wear the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when working with a mitre saw.

Perform Regular Maintenance

To ensure your mitre saw works as efficiently and effectively as possible, proper maintenance is essential. This is imperative in terms of safety but it is also important to ensure the mitre saw does not malfunction. Dull blades and broken parts can lead to very serious, possibly even life-threatening injuries if left unsorted. To avoid this happening, regular routine maintenance checks are necessary. Replace any broken parts and lubricate them occasionally to avoid any malfunction. By doing so, your mitre saw will be far more reliable and you'll reduce your chance of injury while using it.

Bosch Starlock range

Starlock by Bosch

What is Starlock?

Starlock is an improved, standardised accessory fitting system for multi-tools. The main aim of the new system is to offer one common standard that delivers greater performance through faster work progress and more precise results.

How it works

Starlock accessories work hard and work fast. The Starlock blades feature a future proof 'cake tin' pattern for a 3D connection between the motor and the accessory. This means there's much better contact and power transfer from tool to blade which is particularly important with cordless tools. This feature ensures 100% power transfer for maximum stability, performance and precision.

Changing blades could not be easier. Simply place the tool on the back of the blade and press down. A click sound will let you know the spring loaded jaws have successfully snapped over the blade to hold it secure*.

There's no burned fingers from grabbing hold of a hot blade! Releasing the used blade is simple. Just flick the lever on the tool and the blade will fall out. You are then able to push the tool onto a new Bosch Starlock blade and, in just a few seconds, you'll be back to the job in hand.

*The snap on function is not part of the GOP 12V and 30-28.

Benefits of Starlock

  • Tight-lock interface system lets you set the blade at any angle for easy access.
  • Faster tool change; the quick release feature allows you to change blades in a matter of seconds. The blades simply click on.
  • 3D connection between the motor and the blade for 100% power transfer.
  • Compatibility with most multi-tools on the market thanks to the backwards compatible blades. Note: old multi-tool blades are not compatible with the new Starlock multi-tools.
  • Starlock blades and accessories are colour coded for easy identification. The colour on the blade's connection point corresponds to its intended application. (see guide below).
  • A wide range of blade types to cut wood, drywall, metal and abrasive fibre cement.
  • Blades designed for a wide range of applications including flush cutting, scraping, sanding, grinding and plunge cutting.
  • The blade's specifications are laser etched on the surface for ease of reference.
  • Bosch's colour coding of Starlock blades and accessories is useful when trying to find the one you need for the job.

Starlock Blades

For easy identification there are three different Starlock categories. Each category is designed to match the power output of its compatible oscillating tools. Through the new coding into performance classes, only the accessory that matches the performance of the machine can be clamped on. This prevents overloads and ensures higher levels of safety at all times. In a nutshell, you are not able to use Starlock blades on units that are unable to provide the level of torque and power required. Here we'll take a look at the different types and their intended use.

Starlock types

Starlock blades

Covering the lower performance range, the unique patented mounting works reliably with oscillating power tools.

Furthermore, it also works well with tools with the universal dodecagon (12 point) mounting from other manufacturers.

  • Fits ALL multi-cutters including Bosch, Makita, Fein, Metabo, Hitachi, AEG, Milwaukee, Ryobi, Skil and Einhell. DeWALT multi-tools require an adaptor.

StarlockPlus blades

Due to the fact that StarlockPlus blades require more power, these blades are limited to use with certain multi-tools. For ease of reference, StarlockPlus blades work perfectly with all multi-function tools with a StarlockPlus mounting.

  • StarlockPlus blades fit ALL new Bosch Starlock multi-tools, some old Bosch oscillating tools with OIS interface and ALL Fein multi-cutters. All other brands require an adaptor.

StarlockMax blades

These blades match the power output of both Bosch and Fein multi-tools, as well as very powerful oscillating power tools. StarlockMax blades are the most powerful blade classification which makes them perfect for all multi-function tools with a StarlockMax mounting.

  • Fits ALL new Bosch StarlockMax multi-cutters. They will also fit all new Fein Starlock multi-tools including the FEIN SuperCut Construction tool. All other brands will require an adaptor.

Starlock, a joint venture between Bosch and Fein, is a patented blade mounting system that provides a very fast ‘snap in’ blade fitting. In recent years, the Starlock system has set the new standard for multi-tools and accessories. The old OIS interface was limited in blade length and oscillation angle and the OIS pins were prone to breakages. With the 3D interface (star) and Bosch’s three different categories (Starlock, StarlockPlus and StarlockMax), Starlock’s simple click lock system is able to transfer more force and can combine longer blades with higher oscillating angles. For convenience, the Starlock system doesn’t require tools and the blades are backwards compatible with other star fit oscillating tools.

Bosch Saws

It is worth a moment before we talk about the types of saws available to talk about the power options. Like most other power tools, saws are now available in corded and cordless options. A few years ago there would be no debate. Cordless saws couldn’t deliver the raw power, blade speed, and runtime that is required on job sites. However, since then battery technology has advanced rapidly. Now with far greater stability and constant power delivery with higher capacity, many cordless saws perform as well as mains powered machines.

Bosch Circular Saw

Circular Saws

The hand held circular saw is one of the most common power tools around. You’ll see one on every construction site, as its applications are numerous. Many home maintenance and building projects will also benefit from having a circular saw to hand. They are available in a range of blade diameters to give different depth cutting for the application required. It is important to choose the right blade for the material being cut. For convenience, we supply a full range of circular saw blades to fit your saw.

Circular saw features

  • Depth adjustable blade for maximum cutting performance and some joint work.
  • Angle adjustment for bevel work.
  • Some have bases able to accept a guide rail with gives even greater accuracy than a side fence.

Bosch Circular Saw

A good quality circular saw will make short work of all types of solid wood and man made sheets making them ideal for:

  • Straight ripping and crosscutting
  • Cutting sheet material like plywood and MDF
  • Grooving (with repetitive cuts)
  • Bevel work (if the saw has the ability to angle the blade)

Bosch circular saws are perfect for precise rip and mitre cuts. Combining safety and convenience, circular saws saw perfectly in hard fibre boards, solid wood, chipboard and wood core plywood.

Bosch Circular SawPlunge Saws

A plunge saw, often referred to as a track saw is based on a circular saw. However, when comparing the two the plunge saw has fast become the saw of choice. This is due to the very high accuracy that can be achieved using the track/rail system these saws are specifically designed to be used on. Dust extraction is also superior to a circular saw as the guarding is more enclosed.

As the name implies, plunge saws can plunge into the work safely and can also be used for cut outs.

Many plunge saws have other features such as:

  • -1° negative angle available
  • Angle pre-set for faster setting and repetitive cutting
  • Precision depth adjuster showing scales on and off the guide rail

The rail/track is fitted with an anti-splinter guard. This would be cut through on the first cut. It is advisable to change the guard when a blade is changed to ensure a splinter-free cut. The underside of the rails have cushion strips to grip work. As a result, clamping is often unnecessary but advised for some more slippery/shiny surfaces. For convenience, rails can be joined together to create longer cutting capacities.

Bosch Circular Saw

Plunge saws are ideal for cutting:

  • Solid and man-made board materials
  • Bevel and mitre cuts even on small workpieces
  • Quick, accurate cuts over and over again
  • Ideal for worktops and laminates

Bosch JigsawJigsaws

A jigsaw is an all round saw able to cut a host of materials due to the huge blade range available. This makes it a very useful tool.

Jigsaws are brilliant if you need to:

  • Cut custom shapes
  • Cut outs
  • Multi materials with different blade types
  • Cutting pipes as well as other irregular shapes

If you need to cut a specific shape for your project, jigsaws allow for a lot of control. They are useful for cutting straight lines, curves and tight radius and cut outs. Jigsaws rely on a good blade guide system to deliver a straight vertical cut. The cut will be as straight as the guidance; side fences are available but they will never be as accurate as a circular saw for straight cutting.

Bosch JigsawWith a jigsaw there's variable speed on the trigger as well as a speed selection. This is important so you can control the speed rate. The pendulum action (often in 3 steps) controls the way the blade moves, other than the straightforward up and down motion. This gives a very slight extra movement of the blade which generally improves the cut and speed of cut. In some cases, it also helps make the blades last longer.

Furthermore, fast blade change is another feature on many jigsaws. For example, the Bosch jigsaws come with Bosch SDS as standard. This means you enjoy effortless and safe blade changes in a matter of seconds- without the need for additional tools.

Lastly, a comprehensive range of jigsaw blades are available. These allow you to cut a host of materials from all types of wood, plastics, ceramic, insulation materials and metals such as hardened nails and even cast iron. Please see our Bosch range for more information.

Recip Saws

Recip saws, otherwise known as reciprocating or sabre saws are hand-held saws that have gained in popularity. This is due to how universal they can be especially for demolition work. They will cut through multi materials in one cut, even hardened nails as well as pipes and pruning trees! The Bosch range of recip saws deliver powerful cuts, ideal for renovation and conversion work as well as sawing plastic pipes. They are also fantastic for cutting up branches in the garden. Whatever your task, recip saws are a great addition to your range of tools.

Recip saws are great if you need to cut and rip out materials around windows and doors. One of the most tedious tasks when you replace windows and doors is ripping out the old fittings. Recip saws make easy work of these kind of tasks and take over when other tools fail.

Bosch Recip SawNeed to cut through plasterboard or joists?

Recip saws are the perfect solution. With the ability to accept a massive range of blades designed for cutting through all kinds of material such as wood, plasterboard and metal, recip saws slice through most things you need.

  • Fast and very effective for single and multi materials
  • Blades available to cut wood, hardened nails, plasterboard, metal, plastic and metal pipes and more!

Bosch MultitoolMultitools

Multitools are tools that use an oscillating system to drive the accessory giving smooth running for precise and accurate cutting, sanding and rasping in a wide range of materials. They are also often referred to as multi-cutters.

Precision is down to the quality of the tool. Bosch GOP multitools with Starlock fitting ensure the best power transmission. A host of different accessories allow these tools to be a true multitool and a problem solver. They are also time savers taking on many projects that other tools can not do.

Bosch MultitoolStarlock is a superior oscillating multi-tool system whose key benefits stem from a much firmer accessory attachment. Its 3D mounting interface increases power transfer and enables a greater range of applications. In simple terms, the 3D shape of a Starlock accessory base plugs very tightly into a correspondingly shaped socket in the Starlock-compatible tool.

Unlike the old OIS mounting system, whose pins are looser and more susceptible to breakages, Starlock’s tighter-locking 3D interface boasts many benefits.

The main advantages include:

  • Ideal for a wide range of applications including sawing, plunge cutting, sanding and grout removal
  • Longer-lasting tools and accessories
  • 100% power transfer – for higher speed, effectiveness, precision and energy efficiency
  • Greater versatility with a wider high-quality accessory range

Chainsaws

Everyone is familiar with this type of woodworking saw. As one of the first mechanical saws on the market, the chainsaw works well to complete just about any work around the garden. Using a chain and tooth system to quickly cut into the wood with a ripping motion, chainsaws are best for clearing tree limbs. They are also suitable for completing imprecise work on various types of wood around the garden.

  • Fast and aggressive
  • Tree felling and logging

UJK Parf Mk II Guide System

Every woodworker strives to achieve consistent right-angled cuts. Based on Pythagoras’ theorem, the UJK Parf Mk II Guide System helps to produce a benchtop with an accurate pattern of 20mm holes. When used with a set of UJK Parf Super Dogs, a guide rail and a track saw, it guarantees perfect, quick and easy 45° and 90° cuts every time.

Accurate cutting

Made in Britain - UJK Parf Mk II Guide SystemThe Mk II (Mark 2) is an upgraded version of the existing Parf Guide System. Designed by Peter Parfitt, the latest Parf Guide System is a joint venture with Axminster Tools & Machinery. Manufacturing of the system takes place entirely in Axminster, Devon under the UJK brand name. The design of the upgraded Parf Guide system preserves and guarantees the long-term accuracy of the jig as well as improving the ease of use.

If you’re looking to build your own workstation or multiple workstations, the UJK Parf Mk II Guide System is an invaluable tool for both professional trades and home workshops alike.

How It Works

The Parf Mk II Guide System uses two Mk II Parf sticks along with a drill guide and a special 3mm drill bit to create rows and columns of holes at perfect right angles. Once the pattern of 3mm holes is complete, you must use the special Parf drilling jig and 20mm boring bit supplied with the kit to enlarge the holes to 20mm. Once complete, your bench top is ready to take the Parf Super Dogs. Both drill bits are suitable for all 1/4″ hex quick change systems including the Festool CENTROTEC.

What’s Included

The new and improved UJK Parf Mk II Guide System comprises:

  • Two Parf sticks; 2 x 1m long rules with a series of 6mm holes along the length at 96mm centres.
  • Ruler locating bush.
  • Two drill guides used to guide the 3mm drill bit.
  • A quality 3mm drill bit and holder to be used with drill guide and guide block.
  • 3 x 3mm guide pins used to keep your Parf sticks in place when marking out.
  • A CNC manufactured guide block; this works in complete harmony with all parts of the system. The hole for the 20mm drill bit is fitted with a bronze self lubricating bushing to give the minimum amount of play.
  • Two low profile dogs; these replace the 3mm locating pins for the second round of drilling. Once your table is complete, the locating dogs make very useful accessories.
  • The shaft of the 20mm bit is ground to a very high tolerance to work perfectly with the bronze self lubricating bushings in the guide. The centre point of the drill is designed for guaranteed accuracy. It has a 3mm diameter that accurately finds it way into the 3mm holes.

Features and Benefits

You may ask, what’s the difference between the current Parf Guide System and the latest Mk II version? Here we give a few of the added benefits of the latest Parf Guide System.

First and foremost, the Parf Mk II Guide System is the ultimate when it comes to the 5 cut test. It is called a 5 cut test because you cut the first surface twice.

Secondly, the upgraded version delivers better engineering practice. Since the launch of the original Parf Guide System, we have been working hard to develop the existing concept and add several user-friendly benefits. As a joint venture with Peter Parfitt, we’ve made the UJK Parf Guide System into something even more effective, offering you more control.

UJK Parf Mk II Guide SystemPreviously, (through bad practice) it was possible to elongate the 3mm holes in the ruler over time when using the simple guide bush. However, we’ve now found a way to completely eliminate this issue. With the Parf Mk II Guide System, the drill bit never comes into contact with the ruler thanks to the larger 6mm holes. This means neither the drill bit nor the ruler will ever wear out.

Next, rather than just the 1 drill guide, we’ve now included 2 x Mk II drill guides. Throughout the majority of the process, you’ll use the 1.5mm deep drill guide. However, when the two Parf sticks overlap, you will need to use the 3mm deep drill guide to accommodate the extra depth.

User-friendly Benefits

Furthermore, the 3mm drill bit is now supplied in a Festool CENTROTEC holder for quicker, more efficient working at all times. Also, the Parf sticks are now more robust, thanks to the pearl chrome finish. Lastly, there’s no glare or reflection which makes them easier to work with in bright and well-lit areas.

Drill bit supplied in a Festool CENTROTEC holder
UJK Parf Mk II Guide System

As before, there’s a metric scale on both of the rules, but it’s much clearer this time. The rulers are precise thanks to the high quality manufacturing methods and make useful metre long rulers.  Moreover, the holes on the 1m rules are now numbered. This makes it easier to reference and reduces the chance of making any errors. We’ve also added in extra holes along both of the Parf sticks. This means it is possible to now make a grid 48mm or 32mm apart in addition to the standard 96mm. If you need to make smaller components, the smaller spacing is ideal for creating a tighter formation.

Finally, as part of a rolling change, both the current Parf Guide System and the latest upgraded version include improved pins. More ergonomic in design, the pins are now easier to remove with less resistance.

Round Up

The new and improved UJK Parf Mk II Guide System is efficient, simple to use and reliable. It is ideal for home workshop and professional trade use. If you’re looking to create multiple custom-made benchtops or portable cutting boards in under 30 minutes, this is the tool for you. The Parf Mk II Guide System guarantees perfect 45° and 90° cuts, producing highly accurate results every time and eliminates any potential issues through best engineering practices.

If you are unsure you'll need the newer Parf Mk II Guide System, why not go for the original? The UJK Parf Guide System is perfect for those on more of a budget and still allows you to create a CNC accurate grid of 20mm holes.

Drill Types- Choosing the drill for your needs

Screwdrivers

The main function of a screwdriver, as the name implies, is to drive screws. It differs from a drill driver in the fact that it is normally supplied with just a hex bit holder (no keyless drill chuck). Furthermore, there is no speed selection. Depending on your requirements and preference, both corded and cordless versions are available.

Drill Drivers

When it comes to useful drill types, a drill driver is a great piece of kit. As a cordless tool, the main function of a drill driver is to drive screws. They can also be used to drill and countersink into wood, metal and many other materials. They can even be used on softer masonry such as brick and tiles if used with the right non impact bit. Drill drivers have a choice of 2 speeds; low for screwdriving and higher for drilling. Finally, many offer a choice of torque allowing you to determine how much force you want to drive the screw.

Combi Drills

In essence, a cordless combi drill is two tools in one. The main function of a combi drill is to drill holes in wood, metal and other material. It will also drive screws and has the ability to drill holes into concrete and masonry via the useful hammer function. As with drill drivers, combi drills provide a choice of speed; up to 3 speeds in some versions, and also a variable torque range. Overall, combi drills are generally considered the most popular drill choice due to their all round capabilities.

Learn more about Combi Drills by reading our dedicated Knowledge piece...

Impact Drills and Wrenches

Impact drills are mainly used for repetitive fast screwdriving of fixings and fasteners. This is due to the fact they delivery high torque and speed at the same time. As such, impact drivers have fast become the fixing tool of choice for many tradesmen and women.

One of the biggest benefits of impact drills is their ability to give raw power from the bit rotation. What's more, concussive blows provide power to drive into thick dense materials, if required. Typically, impact drivers have a hex drive. In comparison, impact drills often give two or three times more driving force (torque) than an average drill.

Similarly, impact wrenches work on the same principle but deliver torque via a 3/8” and ½” square drive, suitable for impact sockets and other square drive fittings.

Want to know more? Read our article for more information on this subject...

Percussion/Hammer Drills

These are the most common mains powered drills and were around long before cordless drills came along. This type of drill is ideal if you need to drill into all but the hardest of materials such as stone and granite. Fitted with non hammer and hammer action selection to allow a masonry bit to be used. Some percussion/hammer drills also have variable speed which means you can drive screws. However, one thing to consider is these drills are not as easy to control as cordless drills. They will often run too fast and most models do not have a torque setting.

SDS+ Drills

As a very effective masonry drill, SDS+ drills allow you to drill with ease and speed into all types of masonry and stone, including flint. They are available in cordless and corded versions. SDS+ drills are often referred to as 2kg or 4kg hammers; the kg relates to the amount of joules of impact energy the tool provides.

SDS refers to the how the chuck interacts with the bit. SDS+ bits are slotted and the design allows them to be inserted into the chuck. With a simple twist, the bits are locked into place via the chuck's sprung ball bearings. Using slots on the SDS+ drill bits creates a back and forth motion. This increases the strength of the hammer action of the drill. At the same, it also reduces friction inside the drill.

Options

Some versions allow you to turn the rotation off and use for chiselling. If you turn off the hammer, you can also use the drill for normal drilling tasks. Some also have an interchangeable keyless (or keyed) chuck that can be exchanged with the SDS+ chuck. Alternatively, a second chuck can be attached using an SDS+ arbour and chuck to allow drill bits without SDS+ fitting to be used with the rotary only mode.

SDS+ drills are available in 2 mode or 3 mode:

  • 2 mode: rotary action and a rotary with a hammer action (SDS+)
  • 3 mode: rotary, rotary hammer and hammer only action (no rotation for chiselling)

Want to learn more about SDS drills? Take a look at our dedicated Knowledge piece...

SDS Max

In addition to SDS+ drills, there's also a category called SDS Max. These drills are designed for the heaviest masonry work and take a different accessory fitting to SDS+ drills.

Angle Drills

Available in corded or cordless versions, angle drills are excellent if you need to access spaces that conventional drills are unable to reach. This includes getting behind beams and joists. With this in mind, angle drills are very popular with plumbers and electricians. Angle drills allow plumbers to install pipe where they can best fit. Furthermore, electricians can drill through studs to run wire without having to hold the drill at an unnatural angle. This helps with the overall comfort and versatility of this type of drill.

Angle drills offer plenty of torque when you need it. This allows for slow drilling when necessary. The differing speeds mean the drill itself is less likely to burn out the motor from heavier use. In turn, this means the drill can be called on to drill through heavy wood at times.

Helpful information

Cordless and corded tools

Cordless battery powered drills have revolutionised the way we drill over the last 20 years, gaining more and more ground and far out selling corded mains powered drills. With increased battery technology, far longer run times and power that in many cases can match a mains powered drill, cordless versions continue to take over!

Torque

In a nutshell, torque is the turning force delivered by the cordless drill driver. Torque is needed to insert and remove screws as well as drill holes. As a rule of thumb, more demanding tasks (e.g. working with tougher materials or larger screws) will require higher levels of torque.

Battery types

Almost completely gone are NiCd (Nickel cadmium) and NiMh (Nickel Metal hydride) batteries. These have been replaced with Li-Ion (Lithium- Ion) batteries. The main benefits of these batteries is that they are high capacity with no memory effect, offer low discharge in storage and fast charge times.

Battery voltages

Another important consideration is that there is a host of battery voltages. The most common battery voltages are 10.8V/12V, 14.4V, 18V. Gaining more and more pace recently, 36V batteries are sometimes added to a tool as a twin 18V.

Ah values

The Ah value is basically how much fuel is in the tank. These vary from the most compact of batteries at 1.5Ah increasing upwards in value. Here at Axminster, the furthest we go is 5.0Ah due to the complexities of shipping Li-Ion batteries.

The Story Of The Super Dog

How it started... Identifying a need

The need of the Parf Super Dog was first expressed with an aspiration to develop a tool that would complement our UJK Parf Guide System. The original concept of the product was to attain maximum squareness of a tall dog that did not necessitate the use of a securing knob under the worktop. After a consultation with Peter Parfitt we set out to design and develop the dog.

Designing the Super Dog

Our in-house product development team begin work on the Super Dog design. Starting with drawings and sketches, they then create a 2D CAD (computer-aided design). Finally, using industrial technology, the 3D printer creates a Parf Super Dog prototype. With the prototype, the team can sit down with a real version of the product and evaluate which features are worth keeping and which ones need to be revised.

Producing the pack

Once the product has been evaluated, the correct prototype and designs are passed to our in-house innovation and manufacturing team. Using the latest CNC machinery and 303 stainless steel, we produce our first pack of dogs!

Marketing the product

With our in-house marketing team, we commence work on brand development. Within the brand development, there were a couple of aspects to consider. Firstly, we had to decide what branding to use on the product itself. Although the Super Dog was originally considered to be part of the Parf Guide System, it also falls under our UJK Technology brand. As it was such a unique product, capable of standing alone, we decided to brand it UJK. Next, we had to anticipate whether the product would evolve or if we could develop more like it for the range. Hence, the Parf Super Long Dog and Parf Long Super Dog Locking Shaft!

With the branding complete, we commence work on our photography, videography and product content for the website. We also house a retail department who create planograms to establish how the product will be presented in our stores. Content is then produced for email, social media and Knowledge articles and cleverly designed by our in-house digital designers.

At Axminster, no matter what product we sell we are passionate about it being of the highest quality and what our customers want. Developing in-house not only helps us to facilitate this it also gives us new and exciting grounds to create innovative tools that keep us ahead of our competitors.

Router Table Accessories - Our Top Picks

Dust extraction box

First of all, dust extraction from a router table can be difficult. For it to work effectively it needs to extract from both above and below the table. The UJK Technology Dust Extraction Box captures nearly all routing debris and features a 100mm diameter outlet on the back incorporating a 62mm inlet and hose which enables extraction from both above and below the table simultaneously. There's also an easy-access door on the front with a magnetic catch for quick height adjustments. Designed to fit the UJK Technology Professional and Compact router tables and other custom-made tables of your own design.

Router table fence

Next, a router table fence is an integral part of any router table. Providing a straight reference surface they directly influence the results on the cuts that you make. When you have long outfeed and infeed faces, the router table fence serves as a guide, keeping the stock into and away from the bit. They're also one of the router table accessories that are highly regarded when it comes to safety. The UJK Technology Professional Router Table Fence comes complete with a transparent 63mm dust port for efficient extraction from above the table. Also supplied is an adjustable clear guard to keep your fingers safe. The adjustable infeed and outfeed fences can be opened and closed to the diameter of the cutter in use. A T-slot at the top and front of the fence makes it easy to add accessories. Designed to fit UJK Technology router tables.

Featherboards

When it comes to simple yet effective router table accessories, featherboards are a great choice. Featherboards hold the wood against the fence and the table and ensure that your workpiece doesn't move about when routing. What's more, they add another element of safety as they help to keep your fingers away from the router cutter. They feature adjustable, anti kickback fingers which serve as springs. This prevents any movement or bounce back, reducing the risk of injury. For additional safety in your workshop, it's advisable to set up a number of featherboards against the table and the fence.

Router table featherboards

No Volt Release (NVR) switch

An NVR switch allows you to take full control of your router. The simple device means you no longer need to reach under the table to turn the router on and off. Simply mount the 230V switch onto your router table and plug your router or saw into the 13A socket. Next, switch your machine on and then plug the NVR switch into a convenient power outlet socket (1.5m cable included). Axminster's top quality and versatile NVR switch with a built-in 13A power socket allows you to remotely operate power tools such as routers and circular saws when mounted in tables.

Push stick

A push stick comes with an angled shoe that is long and holds the workpiece in place. This makes it ideal for narrow pieces of wood that need to be routed. The heel on the push stick keeps the wood piece against the fence and the table simultaneously. This router table accessory let's you push your stock all the way past the bit without compromising the quality of the cuts that are made. The pressure applied on the wood piece will maintain smooth and consistent cuts making it a very effective accessory for your router table.

Insert plates

To get the most from your router table, an insert plate is a great addition to your collection of router table accessories. The UJK Technology 10mm aluminium router table insert with universal base is designed to fit the UJK Technology cast iron, phenolic or MDF router table tops. It is unusual in that it features a circular universal base attached to the underside of the plate with four machine screws. The pre-drilled base accommodates many different types of router. This means that you are able to mount your router easily without the need to drill the insert plate.

Router table universal base

Insert discs

Router table insert discs provide greater stability across the router table. They also help to reduce the hole size which improves the extraction. To ensure the greatest levels of safety and reduce the likelihood of wood chips flying about, it is important to select the insert disc depending on the size of the cutter you're using. For convenience the discs are available in a variety of sizes as well as a blank insert so you can create your own custom hole size.

Router elevator

Finally, a router elevator is a fantastic addition to our list of router table accessories. The main advantage of the router elevator is that it allows you to quickly and accurately adjust the height of the cutter from above the router table. This means you no longer need to reach underneath the table to adjust the router each time you use it. The locking mechanism allows you to adjust the height of the router and securely lock it in any position. Routers can either attached directly to the router elevator or with the use of the supplied adaptor plate. This router table accessory is a great time saver especially if you regularly change the depth of cut.

In conclusion, we've selected a handful of simple, yet very useful, router table accessories that will make the ultimate difference in the accuracy of your cutting. Festool SandersFestool Sanders

Hybrid Festool sanders

The latest Festool sanders are a new form of hybrid sander, which sounds dynamic but they really do have some interesting features. So how are they a hybrid? Thanks to a new battery pack the sanders can run either as a corded or cordless sander. The clever design allows you to easily switch between the two modes. Cordless; for when you need the unrestricted freedom to get into those difficult to reach areas and the work can't be brought to a table. Alternatively, you can insert an adapter to plug into the mains for those long sanding jobs. It's worth noting that the mains adapter comes with the SET versions as standard. If you buy the PLUS or Basic versions you'll need to purchase the adapter separately.

Will my existing Festool batteries work in the sanders?

The design of the new batteries means existing Festool batteries won't work. Smaller than the standard 18V battery pack, the new batteries have been designed with ergonomics in mind to make the sanders lighter and easier to handle. With the new battery platform the weight of the sanders has been kept down to just 1.4kg.

Festool Circular Sander Inserting Battery

How long is the runtime?

A useful feature about the 3.1Ah batteries is you can charge a battery in less time than it takes to use it. The average run time is approximately 45 minutes while the charge time is under 30 minutes.

What about the performance?

All three Festool sanders feature a brushless motor which leads to less wear on the tools, reduced drain on the battery and a more efficient runtime. The 2mm sanding stroke will achieve a really fine finish plus each sander comes with a protector to prevent scuff marks and protect the pad when working close to an edge.

Festool Circular Sander Scuff Protector

The sanders also feature Festool's staple of practical solutions such as Multi Material Control (MMC) electronics which adjust the speed to the material. In addition there's the integrated Cleantec bayonet fitting so the extraction hose remains secure to the tool.

Staff Bead & Nosing Router Cutter

Staff bead and nosing router cutters are used to create the rounded front edge of stair treads, or window sills. Likewise, they can also be used to create a decorative stepped half bead on items such as wooden shelves. Available in a number of sizes, the smaller sizes can be used with a free hand router and side fence but a router table setup is recommended for the larger sizes. By varying the setup and using different sizes, it is possible to produce a number of different results.

This router cutter produces a one pass cutter operation meaning it's possible to cut to the full depth in one go.

Tapered Tongue and Groove Cutter Set

Achieve accurate tongue and groove joints on items like table tops and door panels using these two matching cutters. The tongue and groove joint increases the gluing contact area between boards when compared to a standard butt joint. The taper profile creates more strength whilst improving accurate alignment. The interlocking of the boards results in quicker gluing up and cleaning up after. Both cutters are bearing guided meaning it's possible to create curved interlocking items. Ideal for material thicknesses 21mm to 31mm thick.

Axcaliber Tapered Tongue and Groove Set

Adjustable Finger Joint Cutter Set

The tapered profile of the adjustable finger joint cutter makes one of the strongest ways of jointing solid timber either side to side (joint) or even end to grain together. The accuracy of the joint and the increased surface area to be glued provides a joint that is far stronger than other methods of jointing. The set consists of six interchangeable twin tooth cutters which can be re-positioned to allow the cutting of material thickness of 12.7mm up to 36mm. The number of cutters is altered depending on the thickness to be machined. Available in 1/2" shank only and strictly for use in a router table.

Adjustable Finger Joint Cutter Set

Reversible Stile and Rail Cutter (Bevel)

The making of items like kitchen doors, bath panels or even display cabinets is achievable using a reversible stile and rail cutter. This simple bevel profile creates a classic uncluttered result. Simply reposition the accurately ground components of the cutter to allow both the end grain cut (rail) and the long grain cut (stile) to be machined.  The bearing guided reversible stile and rail cutter allows for accurate repeat setting up and the machining of curved components. Suitable for use within a router table only and for material thicknesses of between 12mm to 22mm.

Axcaliber Reversible Stile & Rail Cutter (Bevel)

Offset Glue Joint Cutter

The offset glue joint cutter works in a very similar way to a tongue and groove cutter. It is suitable for the accurate jointing of materials to form wider panels for items like table tops. The interlocking profile increases the gluing surface and allows better alignment resulting in a stronger joint that requires less cleaning up.

During set up, the timber must be accurately centred to the cutter, adjusting the cutter height so that the centre of the timber lines up exactly with the centre point of the cutter. When in use, you can cut the board on alternate faces (turned over), to produce an accurate interlocking strong joint that will require minimal cleaning up. For use in a router table only. Suitable for material thicknesses of 14mm to 26mm.

Bearing Guided Architrave Cutter

If you are bored with standard home skirting and architrave, this bearing guided cutter allows you to make your own. One of the biggest benefits is that you can choose your preferred material allowing you to have a natural wood look, without the need to repaint it.  Furthermore, a bearing guided architrave cutter allows you to create your own sizes and lengths for complete flexibility. Suitable for use in a router table only.

Mitre Lock Cutter

A dual purpose cutter used to create accurate 90 degree interlocking mitre joints. The interlocking profile ensures trouble free gluing up and improves the strength of the joint. Additionally, it adds a decorative look, ideal when making boxes and drawers. Finally, this cutter can cut extremely strong joints to create panels or table tops. For use in a router table only.

Three Wing Slot Cutter Set

This set is a combination of our best selling slot cutter discs mounted onto one arbor. The slot cutter sizes are 3.2mm, 4mm, 4.8mm and 6.4mm. Within the set are also a number of spacers and shims ranging from 1mm to 6mm, meaning it is possible to adapt the cutter to suit the task required. This could include creating a tongue and groove set, biscuit jointing, or cutting rebates and grooves. The set also comes with a bearing, which when set within the cutter, provides a 12.7mm depth of cut. Without the bearing, 15.8mm depth of cut is achievable. All this adds up to a very adaptable tasking cutter.

Axcaliber Bearing Guided Classic Ogee Cutter

Bearing Guided Classic Ogee Cutter

The shape of this traditional cutter allows you to cut a decorative edge onto items such as shelves and plinths. Likewise, it can also be used to create picture frame mouldings. The bearing allows the cutter to be guided meaning it is suitable for use on straight or curved components. This one cutter is capable of doing multiple tasks - when setting up, it's possible to use a small section of the cutter to produce a round over or cove cut. This bearing guided classic ogee cutter can be used free hand as well as in a router table setup.

Exploring the air compressor

If you're one of those people whose confused by the jargon or just daunted by the sheer range of compressors on the market, don't worry, you're not alone. Far from it in fact.

With this in mind, we've decided to help you out. This guide will go through the many important features of a compressor as well as the things you need to consider when buying one. The end aim is to help you get the air supply you need, first time.

Understanding Compressor Jargon

Before we get started, here is a brief look at the jargon and terminology frequently used when talking compressors.

  • Air Flow (output) - The volume of compressed air pushed out by the compressor - also called Free Air Delivery (FAD). Measured in Cubic feet Per Minute (CFM) or Litres per minute (L/min).
  • Pressure - This is the force of the compressed air. It is expressed in Pounds per Square Inch (Psi) or Bar.
  • Displacement (volume) -  This is the theoretical capacity of a compressor. Usually worked out by the size of the pumps cylinders and the speed that it operates. Also measured in CFM, this should not be used as an indicator of the power of the compressor.

It's important to remember that you should not buy a compressor based on its displacement. This figure only represents what it works at if it were 100% efficient. Whereas FAD is what will be discharged.

As a general rule CFM (FAD) is a third less than CFM (displacement). So if a compressor has a displacement of 14.5CFM, the FAD will be around 10CFM.

Air Flow Required

Before you do anything, you must find out how much air you need to power your tools. If the compressor you buy doesn't have the capacities to match your tools, you will find yourself constantly waiting for the tank to fill up. How do you do this?

  • Find the required CFM of the tool you will be using. This is usually found in manual or if you're buying new it should be found in the specification.
  • If you're using more than one tool at the same time, you need to add up the required CFM for each tool.
  • Once you've added up the CFM of the tools you will be using, it's good practice to add in a safety buffer. This is so the compressor won't be working at its maximum capacity all the time. So multiply the final number by 1.2 and this will give you your airflow requirement.

For example, you're going to be using an air nailer (3.5CFM) and an impact wrench (4CFM) at the same time.

7.5CFM X 1.2 = A compressor with at least 8.7 CFM (FAD).

Pressure

You will find that all tools air flow is measured at a certain pressure. So you will need a compressor to match that number. If the pressure is too low, tools won't work, too high and it can cause unnecessary wear.

If you are doing DIY work, most tools will have a maximum operating pressure of 90 PSI (6 Bar). Many compressors will have a working pressure of at least 110 PSI (7.5 Bar) so it shouldn't be hard to find one to cater for your needs.

Of course, larger tools being used for prolonged periods will need higher operating pressures. This is where the larger industrial compressors need to be considered, that can work over 150 PSI (10 Bar).

The Airflow - Air Pressure Equation

As we have said above, all compressors have certain CFM and PSI ratings which you must align with your chosen tools. What is possibly not mentioned enough by people is that these are the compressors maximum ratings. So if you see that a compressor has a FAD of 8 CFM, this will only be at a very low pressure (approx 14.5 psi/1 Bar). In reality, when using a tool at 90 psi, (6 Bar) this compressor may only have a CFM (FAD) of 6.

Here is an example of this from one of our Swan Compressors:

SWAN DRS-215-50 AIR COMPRESSOR 230V - image

CFM (FAD) delivered @ 1 Bar = 5.15

CFM (FAD) delivered @ 7 Bar = 4.15

Now, this may not seem like a big drop, but if you have worked out your tools need a CFM of at least 5 before buying, you will find your tools won’t perform the way you need them to. With that in mind, we would recommend that you always ask for this information before purchasing.

Receiver Size (Tank size)

Very much tied in with how long you will be using your air tools. If you are using tools continuously, then you will need a larger receiver as it will be depleted less often. For intermittent work, a smaller one should suffice. We would always recommend that you buy as big a receiver as you can afford/fit into the workshop.

Here we take a look at two Swan compressors and what jobs they would be suited to doing;

Swan DRS-207-22 - 22 Litre compressor

Great for DIY, craft and some trade uses such as tyre inflation, nailing and stapling.

Swan DRS-207-22 - 22 Litre compressor

Swan SVP-203 3HP 106 litre compressor

Designed to run all day every day, these compressors are best suited to industrial and commercial applications.

Swan SVP-203 3HP 106 litre compressor

Space and Portability

Does your compressor need to be out on the road with you or can it just be kept in a corner of the workshop? Do you have a large area to store it or does it have to be under a workbench? These are questions that need to be answered but of course is also directly affected by the size of the receiver you need.

Oiled vs Oil-less (Oil-free)

A few years ago, this would have been a no-brainer but in recent times oil-less compressors are becoming more and more popular, especially for the home or DIY user.

In all compressors, the pistons need lubricating in order to work reliably for long periods. Oil types as the name suggest use oil to do this. In oil-less versions, the pistons are permanently lubricated with a material such as Teflon.

So what does this mean for you? This chart will show you the key differences between the two.

Oiled Oil-less
Maintenance The oil needs to be changed regularly to ensure the compressor works consistently. No oil means no maintenance. This is why these are often referred to as maintenance free compressors.
Usage As long as you keep the oil topped up, these compressors are much more durable. This is why oil versions are used in industrial applications. The Teflon can wear away over time, drying out the pistons meaning performance will suffer. For this reason these are mainly used for home or DIY use.
Noise Liquid lubrication means these compressors are much quieter than the oil-less alternatives. Generally speaking, these are much louder than oil compressors.
Contaminates There is a risk of contaminating your airline using oil compressors, which if you’re planning on spraying, could ruin your work. No contamination as there’s no oil. Great for spray finishers or clinical practices such as dentists.
Weight In most cases, oil compressors will weigh more than oil-less models that are the same size. These have fewer parts and therefore weigh less than oil compressors. This also means they tend to cost less.

Buying a compressor can be confusing. This is guide will go through the key factors and considerations so you can make an informed decision, first time.

Switch from one to another with no strings attached

The beauty of the Bosch FlexiClick system is the ability to quickly change between attachments. To start with, each drill has a short body and a quick change locking hex bit holder. This means you can quickly switch bits between tasks and larger drill bits stay securely in position. The GSR 12 V-15 FC (the 12V model) will even take a 1/4" hex bit directly in the drive shaft without an attachment. This acts as a magnetic bit holder and gives you the shortest possible length.

To switch between attachments, all that's needed is a twist of the chuck and the attachment is held in place with the twist lock collar. For drilling jobs there is also a standard chuck with a capacity to drill 38mm in wood in the 18V version and 30mm for the 12V.

Offset adaptor - A handy feature for drilling close to an edge when you can't quite get the whole of the drill in the space. In addition, the adaptors also rotate through 360 degrees so you can find the optimum position.

Angle adaptor - This adaptor is invaluable when working in really difficult positions such as between beams or floor joists. Electricians, carpenters, plumbers, you no longer have to hold the drill at an awkward angle. You can create holes where you need to, building the most natural route for pipes and cables. With the 12V Bosch FlexiClick, you can also combine the angle adaptor with a bit holder or a chuck. The advantage of this is that with the hex bit holder you get an even shorter head length for really tricky areas.

Need to drill in masonry or concrete?

If you're opting for the 18V Bosch FlexiClick then you obviously need a little more power. With this version the SDS+ adaptor sets it apart and is a genius addition that allows you to drill up to 10mm diameter in masonry.

How the drills measure up

Max drilling diameter in steel 10mm 13mm
Max screw diameter 7mm 10mm
Torque, max. (hard/soft) 30/15 Nm 50/31 Nm

Balance or brawn?

Ultimately one of the biggest deciding factors between the 18V and 12V will be how much power you need. If your work requires a lot of drilling into brickwork then the extra power of the 18V combined with the SDS+ adaptor has everything you need. Conversely if you need more finesse, 10.8 / 12V tools give you extra dexterity. The lower weight of the GSR 12 V-15 FC is a great example with good balance and easy manoeuvrability.

Do I need an all in one drill?

Have you ever felt you're carrying around too much gear? What the Bosch FlexiClick drills offer is the ability to cut down on the number of systainers needed for a job. Handy if you have flights of stairs to walk up and also if you're the type of person that likes everything succinct and neatly in its place. The drills give you so many options all from one systainer. If you feel you won't use all the attachments at once you can always buy the 18V drill as a body only and build up the kit with the attachments as needed.

But what do you think of the FlexiClick drills? If you've put one to the test be sure to let us know in the comments below.

How does the Mirka DEOS handle?

Mirka is well known for producing sanders that are efficient and easier to manoeuvre. Mirka's DEROS is testament to this and continues to be one of the lightest machines on the market today. Weighing just 1kg and only 10cm high the Mirka DEOS continues this tradition of ergonomic tools that are easy to handle. If your work frequently requires reaching overhead or low down then the sander's low weight and balance makes jobs like these so much easier.

Better for being brushless

The sander houses a brushless motor making it less prone to wear. When you're sanding for continuous periods there's more strain on the components and this is when brushless motors start to pay for themselves. Fewer parts in contact with each other also means it's more efficient as there's less friction. The Mirka DEOS is able to generate 250W of power equivalent to 360W from a traditional motor. Nobody likes to be hanging around particularly when doing something as repetitive as sanding. What the brushless motor ultimately means is that you can finish jobs faster.

Mirka DEOS - efficient and easier to manoeuvre into tricky spaces

Why bluetooth is better for you

One of the key features of the Mirka DEOS is the bluetooth option which helps you monitor your exposure to vibration. Excessive vibrations can cause damage to the nerves, muscles and joints leading to vibration white finger syndrome. We all know it's important to evaluate how long we're using power tools for but it's often difficult to judge how long is too long. Mirka makes it easy with the development of its app, myMirka. The app is free to download and vibration levels show through an indicator on your screen. Looking at the dial there's a colour scale highlighting when vibrations reach a warning point. The app also has a speed indicator showing the machine's running speed and provides tips and advice on how to lower the vibrations.

Guidance without the gimmicks

In addition to the standard vibration indicator, Mirka provides an in-app purchase which monitors a user's daily vibration exposure. Unfortunately some features on tools verge on being gimmicks rather than of real value. In this instance however the app is a useful addition in helping to regulate your own safety. An easy to read dial signals when the operator reaches 2.5 m/s2 of the maximum daily vibration level.

To highlight the warning the dial turns to yellow making it clear when maximum exposure has been reached. In addition, the app also plots the vibration exposure over the last 30 days. You then have a clear indication of when you've been in the safe zone or there's a risk of over exposure. If you're in charge of a workforce or the safety of others then this feature could also be essential when thinking about compliance and your duty of care.

Dust free sanding

Mirka is synonymous with the term dust free sanding and the introduction of their Abranet abrasive was revolutionary to sanding. The Mirka DEOS in the kit form comes with four packs of Abranet abrasive which when connected to an extractor, uses the open mesh system to draw dust through the abrasive. In terms of results what you get is sanding without the dust, a clearer line of sight and importantly a better finish with less time correcting areas.

Do I need a DEOS?

Vibration monitoring, excellent handling and virtually no dust, the DEOS certainly has features that start to add up. Working for long periods, the low weight and comfort in your hand also make a significant difference. Sanding with the DEOS is like the first time you start to use Abranet abrasive. There's a sense of justification for the extra expense over standard abrasives. Less clogging of the paper, sections don't need to be redone and the realisation about the time saved. It's all these points that make it cost effective. Dust free sanding and vibration monitoring also have the obvious and vital health benefits. They say you can't put a price on your health but what monetary value do you place on not inhaling dust and lowering your vibration exposure? Something to think about when choosing your next sander.
